Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
