Biden Bowl, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing undesired gifts could be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Auction
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 presents received by her by international figures while abroad. The eclectic collection reportedly features items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. The plan is to auctioned off in a public auction by a Italian fine art auction house. The specific date remains to be announced, but the intention is to hold the auction by year's end, with all funds raised going to various charities.
Palazzo Chigi Treasures
These gifts are said to be kept in a secure area on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been stored away over a long period.
The full gift list has not yet been made public, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was reviewed by officials. The discussion focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.
A Global Assortment of Presents
Notable gifts feature:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from within her party, with building relationships with international counterparts and making Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
This charitable initiative symbolizes a novel approach to handle the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a political career.
