Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
