Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
At that time, the league found that the Saints had incentivized team members for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.
What Sparked the Latest Dispute
Wilson's response came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 victory over the New York. The coach remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.
Background of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245 million contract.
- The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- The coach benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
