Scream OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor reveals.
A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites
Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow still living in a strange communal scenario. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
