Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Squad
The English team has opted for a 12-man selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, indicating there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s condition.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.
During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers is still the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.
However the coach has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
