The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
