The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Acute Lack of Obesity Injections

Fewer than a tenth of people eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it publishes its inaugural recommendations on the therapies.

With more than one billion individuals worldwide currently obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer access to these injectable treatments.

According to forecasts, more than two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidelines recognises that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with holistic and continuous treatment," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are major barriers to broad availability to the injections that can assist patients in reducing significant weight, notes the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Even in the current best projected case, the production of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – under 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The advice calls on countries and companies to expand access, by strategies like licensing agreements.

How Weight-Loss Injections Function

These medications mimick a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and increase satiety so users consume fewer calories.

Patients typically see weight reduction after several weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Evidence suggests people may put most of the weight back on after a year of discontinuing the drug, when their normal food cravings come back.
