The Last of Us Director's New Game That Looks Very Different Yet Builds On Core Principles.

The acclaimed co-director responsible for the iconic survival game has unveiled his return into game development. The upcoming game, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, signifies the first release for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on his past achievements with a focus on characters that learn and adapt.

Introducing a Novel Adventure Game Concept

Shown for the first time at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a character-puzzle-platformer. You guide Gertie, a character who subverts conventional action-game archetypes. This central concept stemmed from an interest in re-examining the typical hero’s journey.

"What if you didn’t have the sword or shield? Perhaps you are somehow encumbered? An aging witch, for instance?" posed Straley. "The concept seemed really fascinating to question the definition of a protagonist. A hero is about overcoming obstacles, but also encompasses dedication, resolve, and tenacity."

Evolving Past Companions: A New Level of AI Interaction

Although this project looks different at first glance, its core innovation is a direct continuation the character dynamics pioneered in The Last of Us. This whole endeavor was inspired by a key thought: "Is it possible to design Ellie more dynamic and responsive based on player actions?"

The mysterious beast in the game transcends typical AI behavior. The director likens it to a learning entity which observes and responds with evolving behaviors. To begin with, it explores with wonder, potentially leading to playful hijinks. Next, it moves into a mimicry phase. Ultimately, it watches and learns to learn how things work.

  • As an instance: When the partner witnesses an object being placed, it learns the motion absent the context.
  • This leads it to start picking up various things and try slotting them, copying the action.
  • Understanding comes when it stumbles upon solving a challenge, creating a genuine learning moment.

A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative

Such advanced AI seeks to generate a unique story for each player. The director emphasizes that this project functions as a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure as opposed to a scripted, action-heavy path.

"Each effort to insert more hardcore story beats for this project, the dynamic felt wrong," the director noted. "The true vitality between these characters lies in the fact that every person who plays are going to have personal anecdotes and outcomes than I will."

By prioritizing emergent, character-driven storytelling, this upcoming game represents both a continuation and a drastic departure from Straley's well-known franchises. The game remains being built for Windows PC.
