The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
