A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us locate the footage.

We are analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the location of where the images originated was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.

Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
